How does it feel to be a Christian student at an Islamic university? We are from LPM Campus interviewed two Christian students about their story while studying at UMS. Here is their story.

Tommy, 5th semester student, Public Health

Why choose UMS?
Because, first, my parents was studied here. Then, Semarang are too far, Jogja isn't available, the closest (for Public Health) are here.

As a Christian, is there any doubt when entering an islamic university?
Nothing, just normal

When you are a new student, there are several tests such as BTA and Sobron, how do you go through it?
I wasn't participate in BTA and Sobron, so I take Study Islamic Studies 1 and 2 class

Is there any problem?
I dont considered it as a problem, there are lecturers who help me. The most difficult is, for example there is a verse in the Qur'an. The exam's material are in the book. When exam, the question does not use the Qur'anic verses.

How does it feel studied in an islamic campus?
It is just like the others

Dhesma, 3th semester student, Public Health

Why choose UMS?
One of a million reason because UMS is closest to my workplace. Also, there is an employee class and UMS accept me as a student.

As a Christian, is there any doubt when entering an islamic university?
Honestly, there is still a thing. But because my purpose is to learn, so it doesn't matter. The important thing is to get the knowledge.

When you are a new student, there are several tests such as BTA and Sobron, how do you go through it?
Luckily, UMS understand for non (moslem) students. The important thing is coordination. Ask for replacement terms or duties. Fortunately there are substitute tasks that I can do. So I can get my GPA.

Are there problems in the field of bureaucracy?
Cliche. Still there. But it can be overcome anyway. Yes because I'm a transfer students too. So, information or bureaucracy might be "different" from the others. So, indeed sometimes you have lost info etc. It can still be pursued and fortunately, the Public Health lecturers help a lot in the bureaucracy, especially for the cooperation with LPPIK.

How about Islam-Iptek and Kemuhammadiyahan study?
There are special class with all non-Muslim students. Islam-Iptek is being carried out again but yes there is a little dispensation.

Are there difficulties in following lessons related to Islam?
Hehehe, it is definitely difficult. But just do as best as you can. My friends are open minded and my lecturers too. So I just enjoy it.

How does it feel studied in an islamic campus?
As a minority I actually dont take it too much. Because my goal here is to seek for knowledge. If I'm "watched" (because don't wearing hijab/jilbab), for to me it's  just a normal thing. Because my friends is open minded and cool. So it's just fun.

There is a big hope of the founders of Muhammadiyah to uphold the lessons from Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW, including live in harmony with all people, all creature, becoming rahmatan lil alamin for all beings. We as a student, believe in nowadays and at any time, deep faith can broaden the heart and mind. Like Isa AS's love for his people, Ibrahim AS's love when sacrificing his son, and Muhammad SAW's love for all beings around the world.

In the present days, the threat of harmony are stands in the frontdoor of Indonesia. But as long as there is love, all Indonesian people will work together to protect Indonesia as a shared home, the only home.

There will always be a hope that can be underestimated, but will not be afraid of failure. It's a hope of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika.

Happy New Year 2019, may Allah bless all of us!
