What is on your mind when you hear 'Little Netherland'?
Maybe you will think it is a place or area in the Netherlands. Don’t you?
'Little Netherland' is a nickname or designation for an area in Semarang City, Central Java. This area is known as the Old City of Semarang.

Why is it called Little Netherland?

It is called Little Netherland because the area is surrounded by canals and European-style buildings, which make it look like "Netherland". This area became one of the witnesses and evidence of the existence of Dutch colonialism in Semarang.

In the Dutch colonial period, the Old City of Semarang was the centre of government, commerce and elite settlement for the Dutch people. So do not be surprised if around the Old City of Semarang are found many luxurious and majestic European-style buildings.

Now, the Old City of Semarang has become one of the landmarks in Semarang City that must be visited while in Semarang. The old European-style buildings, with tall doors, large windows, stained glass and the alleys that seemed mysterious are the main attraction for tourists.
